Meet Rusty - courtesy post
Meet Rusty!
He’s a sweet and very loving 10-month-old boy rescued from an overcrowded LA area shelter a few months ago. He was fearful in the shelter, but a local rescuer didn't feel he should be euthanized for being timid and got him out on his last day. Rusty is all heart, pure sweetness and perhaps too gentle for our human world - that being said he has touched so many hearts and deserves a chance at finding his forever home with a gentle, loving soul. Could that be you?
We don't know why Rusty is fearful of new things, new people.. probably because of his puppyhood and then ending up at a high kill shelter. It takes him a bit of time to warm up to new people. Once he does, though, he will never leave your side. His first night with his foster mom, he huddled in the corner afraid - but in the middle of the night, she felt him creep into her bed and he snuggled all night. Now he trusts and loves her... it just takes time and patience with this sensitive guy.
Rusty would be the perfect dog for a female who’s home often and lives a quiet life.
He’s not fond of going on walks, but he loves to lie in the sunshine! We think with some time, in a more rural, quiet environment he would learn that walks mean new smells and fun. But in the busy LA area he is in, walks are terrifying and he'd rather stay home.
So we’re saying his adopters should have a yard so he can be outside for awhile every day.
When he comes inside, he’s an adorable couch potato. He LOVES to cuddle on the couch or in bed. He would also love someone who could help him build confidence by providing enrichment games and puzzles for him... and be open to learning.
Rusty is cat-friendly and would do great in a home with a friendly resident dog. He absolutley loves dogs and having a helper dog would be a huge plus for him.
A quiet home on a quiet street — or a rural environment — would be best for this little dude who’s been through so much already in his young life.
Rusty comes with free virtual behavior support once we’ve found the right adopter(s) for him.
He’s currently being fostered in LA but can be brought to San Luis Obispo. Summit Dog Rescue is stepping in to help find him a great forever home, since we fell in love with him on his Instagram post and offered to help (we have a rescue with multiple trainers on our Board).

Disclaimer: The companion animal you are interested in is a courtesy post. Summit Dog Rescue often helps dogs and cats outside our organization to find their forever homes, and these are called "courtesy posts.” By courtesy posting pets from owners and other rescues, we offer our website (and sometimes email assistance) as a resouce to help their pet gain extra exposure. The pet’s bio comes directly from the owner or rescue, and we expect them to provide accurate information, to the best of their knowledge. Summit Dog Rescue in most cases has not met or evaluated these companion animals, so no information about a courtesy post dog or cat is guaranteed. We cannot accept responsibility for any injury or damages to any person or property caused by any courtesy post animals. Courtesy post pets are the sole responsibility of the owner and the adopter. In addition, SDR cannot take these pets in if the courtesy post adoption does not work out.
Also, although we occasionally might ask you to email us (if you’re interested in adopting a courtesy post pet), it’s just so we can help the owner or rescue connect with applicants. You’ll be adopting your new pet directly from the owner or the other rescue, not from Summit Dog Rescue. Please let us know if you’re comfortable with us sharing your information with the owner of the courtesy post pet.
