Adoption Guidelines

Summit Dog Rescue's goal is to find loving forever homes for the dogs and kitties in our care. Everyone deserves a second chance -- especially our animals. We carefully monitor their behaviors and personalities while they spend time in temporary foster homes. That way we're able to match them with permanent homes where they'll have a good life.

For this reason we've created an application process that makes sure the dog or kitty you want to adopt will be just the right one for you.

Your adoption fee helps pay for the care your dog or kitty receives before adoption:  spaying/ neutering, vaccinations, tests and medical treatments (if needed), food, and transport from shelters that are often from out of state. Once you fill out an application and send it in, we'll set up a time for a phone chat to see if your chosen dog or kitty is a good match for you and your loved ones.

General guidelines:
  • If you're looking to adopt a puppy (under one year of age), please read our free Puppy Guide.
  • Dogs that lack confidence may be better suited for a home with another dog. If you're applying to be a single dog household, please email us first at SummitDogRescue@yahoo.com to make sure the dog you want has the confidence to thrive as a single dog.
  • Dog adoption fee:  $485, which covers pre-adoption costs for transport, veterinary care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering and food. However, several dogs have guardian angels that have sponsored a portion of their fee.
  • Kitty adoption fees:  $250 for kittens under 1 year;  $175 for adult kitties over 1 year;  and a discounted fee of $375 for a bonded pair of kitties. Please note:  We do not adopt kitties to applicants under the age of 26, nor to households with kids under the age of 6. Thanks for your understanding.
  • Our dogs come with a Freedom Harness, a microchip, and are fully vaccinated, tested for heartworm (if over one year of age) and are often tested for Erhlichia. Dogs from high heartworm areas come with the remainder of their heartworm prevention medications.
  • Puppies under 6 months of age may still require sterilization surgery after adoption for health reasons. We require a $200 spay/neuter fee for these puppies, which is refunded when adopter shows proof of spay/neuter by their veterinarian within 90 days. Our adoption contract and the State of Colorado mandate that you spay/neuter, so there are no exceptions.
  • Heartworm is not reliably detected in dogs under one year of age, as it is an adult worm that is detectable on the test. Please make sure to continue heartworm prevention, and have your SDR dog tested 3-6 months after adoption to be extra vigilant, regardless of their age or previous heartworm status -- especially if your dog comes from a heartworm-prevalent State such as Arkansas or Texas.
  • Please watch the 10-minute video on dog training (below) called "The Case Against Dominance/Pack Theory." SDR's mission is to educate the public as to the actual science of dog training and behavior modification. Dominance training and "pack theory" has been completely debunked by science, but it is all too prevalent in our society due to misinformation.
