Adoption Process and Policies
Summit Dog Rescue's goal is to find loving forever homes for the dogs and kitties in our care.
*We have our behavior team work with each dog we take into our program. That way we're able to match them with homes that meet their needs - each dog has unique needs based on their learning history, environmental needs, genetics and their personality.
For this reason we've created an application process that makes sure the dog or kitty you want to adopt will be a mutally good fit.
Your adoption fee helps pay for the care your dog or kitty receives before adoption: spaying/ neutering, vaccinations, tests and medical treatments (if needed), food, and transport from shelters that are often from out of state.
General guidelines:
GENERAL ADOPTION PROCESS:
1).After submitting an application, our team will reach out to set up a Zoom meeting (if we think your application could be a good fit for the dog).
2). If the Zoom goes well, and we all decide to move forward we ask you for references.
3). If you are then approved as a pending adopter, we will then ask that you read the brief "Love Has No Age Limit" book and watch the Calm Canine video on bringing home an adoptive dog. youtu.be/rz4yq_azTSw?si=ISIJNx3ZvTYPe0TS
4). Then we do a short pre-adoption Zoom where we discuss the book with you and how to set up your home for the adjustment period.
5). Then you sign up and pay for training sessions with a force-free trainer on our list (this cost is not included in the adoption fee) , and we send you the adoption contract.
6). Normally at that point, we bring you the dog and stay for an hour or so to support you and help the dog settle in (as long as you are within a few hours of Boulder).
7). We do one or two Zoom meetings with you to see how your dog is settling in, and troubleshoot any issues you are dealing with - and support your training sessions (included in your adoption fee).
*** For some dogs, this process may be longer.. where you come and meet with our behavior team and get to know the dog via several meets and training sessions with our trainers (all included in the adoption fee).
Our rescue is very invested in these dogs and helping their adopters be successful so that the adoption is permanent. Our Board has several certified professional trainers and behavior consultants and our mission is to break the cycle of dogs churning through homes and shelters until finally euthanized due to mental detoration from being in the system. ****
