Meet Gracie - adopted

Hi! I'm Gracie! I'm probably about one year old. I'm a purebred Akbash, and that makes me very special! Akbash are a livestock guardian breed from Turkey that the U.S. Dept of Agriculture brought in and gave to ranchers here to help protect their livestock. But because here... our livestock doesn't have human shepherds, my breed ends up roaming away and ending up in kill shelters and starving on the side of the road in rural America.
My rescuers say I'm gentle and super sweet in my home. Maybe you can tell from my pics and videos above that I'm a love bug! I live with teenagers, 2 dogs and 3 cats and get along with them all. I greet people at the door happily, so please remember I'm an Akbash and not a Labrador. My breed has been bred for thousands of years to be a bit wary, so go slow and let me go at my own pace.
I'm housetrained and trustworthy with free roam of the house. I still love toys, playing and enjoy a good bully stick.
I'm actually pretty mellow inside, and spend my days lounging around. When I'm outside I love to lounge in the shade and sometimes bark at squirrels and magpies. I do like to hunt bunnies on walks! I'm a good walker on leash - but I like to stop and sniff and survey my situation.
Make sure you read about Akbash dogs before you apply to bring me into your life. The Akbash breed originated in a place where sheepherders would stand outside with their sheep. I'm bred to chase away coyotes and wolves, but in my suburban Boulder foster home I'm keeping the yard clear of squirrels!
Here's what Summit Dog Rescue has to say about me: “Potential adopters must have livestock guard dog experience or knowledge, and must have at least a 5 ft. fence. No urban applications will be considered. Suburban apps will be considered but will be at disadvantage. Gracie currently lives on a fenced acre and goes on daily walks in a national forest. She's a total gentle spirit. She enjoys lying in the grass, chewing on bully sticks and playing with her friends. She is fabulous with kitties, trustworthy with free roam of the house and housetrained. She's still young and playful. Please know that Akbash dogs are not for everyone, and this means Gracie would not do well in Denver. A dog friend in the home would be a bonus as she loves her known dog friends. She is spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative and on prevention. She only weighs 65 lbs so far... but will most likely grow a bit more."
I'm told I'm on the small side for my breed. I may just be a small girl... but who knows.
In the meantime if you want more info and/or to apply to adopt me, go to the top toolbar, click Adopt, click Dog Application; then fill it out and send it in. A nice volunteer from Summit Dog Rescue will get back to you as soon as they can.
