Make Blue’s Next Chapter the Best Yet!
Meet Sweet Blue! He ranks as one of the most gentle, affectionate, and loving dogs in Summit Dog Rescue history. He loves to cuddle — he is a couch potato. His DNA says he’s a mix of Australian Cattle Dog and Australian Shepherd, making him super smart and eager to learn. He loves training with tasty treats as rewards and gaining new skills, including responding well to hand signals. He loves brainwork and could excel in nosework or other fun games!
Backstory:
Blue was originally adopted as a puppy in 2018 by a young couple. As their family expanded, however, they felt overwhelmed by the demands of parenthood combined with Blue’s special needs. They realized he needed more than they could give him, so they returned Blue to us in January 2023. He is 6 years old now.
Special Needs:
Because of his “double merle” genes, Blue was born deaf and with some visual impairment, especially in bright light. Curious and companionable, he needs a life with fun and recreation that’s well planned, with safe outdoor exposure and predictability to avoid surprising or overwhelming him. But he is really an easy boy, for the right home!
Ideal Home:
We believe Blue can be happy in a home with another dog or two (no cats, please) or as a solo dog — preferably with no children under 8. Blue is best suited to a rural setting, the mountains, or quieter version of suburbia where he won’t feel overstimulated. Blue enjoys his foster peoples’ fenced yard, where he can relax, sniff around, watch for squirrels, and snag snacks below birdfeeders.
Home Alone:
Blue handles downtime just fine. When his foster people are gone, he simply curls up on his bed or the couch and sleeps. He also is crate trained.
People:
He adores people and is never shy about asking for more loving. He eagerly greets visitors who come by, leaping from his bed with his tail wagging in anticipation.
Dog Friends and Dog Strangers:
Blue brings experience living happily with other dogs and enjoys additional dog friends. He doesn’t like being surprised when out on walks, so he needs slow introductions to dogs and people when outdoors. Inside, he is much more relaxed and receptive!
Lifestyle:
Blue prefers and blossoms during slow, predictable safe walks in quiet, nature-filled areas without a lot of other stimulus – curiously sniffing the ground, scanning the sky, and glancing back as if to ask, “Can you smell and see this too? He is also fine without walks on a regular basis... he would be happy with a large yard to run around in.
Let’s put it this way. Blue’s your guy if you’re:
. Someone who wants a relaxed and easygoing buddy
. An empty-nester who wants a homebody companion
. One who prefers evening or other non-peak time walks and recreation (he doesn’t need daily walks)
. Experienced with deaf or special needs dogs is not necessary, but we'd like you to be willing to learn!
Help Included:
Blue has been working with one of our trainers. Additional training sessions will be included in his adoption fee. (Sessions can be done virtually or in person.) We really want his next home to be his last!
NOTE: Since Blue is sponsored, his adoption fee is $125.
Next Step:
If your life, home, and location match the needs of this sweetest, special-needs boy, please send an email of inquiry to [email protected] and tell us about yourself, your home environment, and your lifestyle. A volunteer will contact you as soon as possible.
