Dog Foods

We recommend dog foods that are totally sourced in the United States or Canada.

Nutrisource, Pure Vita and Fromm are some of our favorite brands.

Summit Dog foster dogs are sponsored by Nutrisource! If you think they have beautiful, shiny coats and look healthy, that is why. We can't say enough good things about Nutrisource/Pure Vita.

Raw food is also an excellent choice, and we recommend Marty's Meals in Boulder. Marty's sponsors one SDR dog at a time with their awesome raw food!

                                                                       Ditch the Bowl
We are encouraging all dog guardians to ditch their dog food bowl. Dogs are scavengers and predators. For tens of thousands of years they evolved spending their days on the search for food. Nowadays, we plop their food in a bowl twice a day and it is gone in under a minute. Our dogs are mentally under-stimulated, which leads to boredom, lack of fulfillment and behavior issues.

We recommend puzzle toys for all dogs. You can buy these or make them at home. A muffin tin with tennis balls on top will create a little puzzle for your dog to figure out. Hiding their food in cardboard boxes around the living room is another great idea. Or buying awesome toys like the West Paw Toppl or the Kong - and stuffing it with Nutrisource canned wet food  is another great way to go. You can even pop it in the freezer and make it last longer.  A frozen Toppl with wet food is an excellent way to get your dog to start having a positive association with the crate.
