Meet Alta - courtesy post - on hold
Meet Alta! She's a wonderful 6-year-old Border Collie mix. She was rescued five years ago, and it's likely she lived/survived outside for the first 1-2 years of her life before coming home to her people. Alta has gone from thin, scared, and not potty trained, to the sweetest, most well-behaved pup since!
Alta loves to go camping, hiking and adventuring but spends most of her time in "off-switch mode" as she equally loves lounging around the house (for days or weeks even!). She loves being close to her people. She doesn't chase wildlife (except for squirrels up a tree) and is great off-leash, never straying beyond visual sight. She's been in a few scuffles with a relative's female dog but doesn't appear to be aggressive. She gets along with the other family dog, ignores other dogs when hiking in busy areas, and is good with the family's 2- and 4-year-old kids. She is not tested with cats. She isn't a barker but will bark at the door when deliveries or people come to the door.
The family says that Alta is beginning to struggle with anxiety in response to their growing and highly energetic young children, and they're facing up to the idea that it may be time to find a better, calmer living situation for her. Alta's reaction to noise and stimuli from the kids has created a situation of chronic anxiety, and the family now feels Alta deserves a quieter home.
She'd do really well in a quiet household without young kids (maybe sloth teens would be OK), and would probably really enjoy being the only dog in most cases. She's proven to be highly intelligent when they've done basic obedience training with her, but Alta probably wouldn't do well as a ball or frisbee dog, as even this movement is too stimulating for her. She has a timid shell when she meets new people, but once she feels at home, she is a total bud.
The family is open to an adoption trial period, but would need to do this relatively soon (September) as they plan to move on December 1. It's their hope that, if you're a great fit, they could have Alta foster with you for 6-8 weeks before deciding if adoption makes sense.
Alta is spayed and currently on 40mg of Prozac per day. With a lower energy household, the family believes she could be weaned off as she was not on Prozac for the first 2-1/2 years (pre-high energy kids).
Summit Dog Rescue is helping find a great home for this beautiful, smart girl. For more information and/or to apply to adopt Alta, go to the top toolbar, click Adopt, click Dog Application; then fill it out and send it in. A volunteer from Summit Dog Rescue will contact you as soon as they can.
